Hovering over the speaker icon in the lower right corner indicates "audio configuration error."  But the audio test call works.  What is the error and how to correct?

Contacts shows my colleague status "gray" (invisible or offline), even when he is online and he can see me as "green".  I can't call him, his "call" icon is not selectable (chat is selectable, and works). 

My colleague can call me and I can answer.  But he doesn't show the call as connected and we can't talk in either direction.  Yet my history says we were connected.
