We are a construction and land development company.  We utilize Collanos to share reference documents (often large graphic and CADD files too large to e-mail) between three office locations.  The attraction of the Workspace concept is that even when an individual user is off-line, at a project site for example, they still have the full set of documents available to them.

We are still exploring the capabilities of the package, having only used it for about a month and a half, but so far it has proven to be very useful for making the latest versions of documents available.

The limitations we'd like addressed are:
 - some sort of dynamic control over bandwidth utilization
 - ability to assign document access privileges on a document-by-document basis in addition to by-folder and global basis (often there are documents such as plans or specifications which we'd like to give contractors access to without giving them access to the entire folder or workspace)
 - means to "import" and "export" groups of files or whole folders of files between local hard drive and Workspace folders

These features may already be available, just not "discovered" by our group; if they are I'd appreciate being pointed to them.

I look forward to the continued refinements discussed elsewhere on this forum.  Keep up the great work.

Glad to hear you are making good use of Collanos Workplace.
See my answers below:

1. Question: Some sort of dynamic control over bandwidth utilization
Answer:
You have, to some extent, the ability to change the advanced settings of your bandwidth in
- Tools>Preferences>Connections>Select "Individual" (if you're on a really fast network) and then click "Apply".
- The next step is to go to 'Connections">"Advanced Bandwidth" and customize your settings.
We have an advanced user that posted his suggestions how to do this on his blog: http://www.evilzenscientist.com/blog/2007/01/19/tweaking-collanos-workplace/

2. Question: Ability to assign document access privileges on a document-by-document basis in addition to by-folder and global basis (often there are documents such as plans or specifications which we'd like to give contractors access to without giving them access to the entire folder or workspace)
Answer: Object/File-level and Folder-level permissions is in our roadmap but not very soon. In the meantime, I would create a dedicated workspace for specific contractors and assign them "Guest" or "Participant" Permissions.

3. Question: Means to "import" and "export" groups of files or whole folders of files between local hard drive and Workspace folders.
Answer: Drag and drop both ways.

Was this helpful?
Cheers,
Gil
