Title: How does sync work?
Post by: hannesd on February 13, 2009, 10:11:05 AM
Hi!

I have a view coworkers (lets call them nightshift), which are not online when the rest of us (the dayshift) is online. The go online most of the time, when we are offline.

So I could set up a Collanos Workplace on a server. This user is always online and is a member in any of our Workspaces.
The idea is, that this "server" is used as a central repository, with which all my Collanos users can exchange data.

Now the nightshift should receive the updates form the dayshift via the server.

I am not sure, that this setup currently works.

I want to know, if updates are exchanged between peer only directly or also via other users.

thanks
Hannes

Dear Hannes,

Thank you for your question.

Yoг scheme will work for almost all the cases (data update, etc. ) except the initial download of the workspace from the inviter to invitee which always happens directly from the PC of the inviter  to the PC of the invitee.

Though you may overcome even this trouble -  just create all new workspaces on this "server" and invite all users from there.

I have set up my server and confirm, that the 3-way sync works.
Of course, both the day and the night shift think, that they still need to sync each other (there remain some numbers in the "out" display), which only go away when both day and night shift users are online.
But the changes are synced through the server.

Thanks
Hannes

hello, just a sidenote.
i want to create a server user too, but while we are testing collanos we have noticed that the software got stuck after awhile and you need to log off and log back in to make the sync working. this is strange, but i want to ask you if you already know of ths bug or it is new to you even.
i work on vista while my collegue on xp and it kind of does it on both computers.

thanks

I am running the server on Debian + KDE core + Collanos. The clients are running Vista (both 32 and 64 bit) and XP. I sometimes have troubles with sync after wakeup from hibernate. Just upgrading to 1.4.0.2. We'll see...
