well, I figured it out myself. I uninstalled Workplace on the Mac, deleted the relevant folders from the Applications Library (I guess they contained the user profile information) and started all over. When I reinstalled Workplace I then had an opportunity to set up a new user profile.
I suggest that the need for different profiles on different computers be made a lot more clear in the installation instructions and online FAQs. It would have saved me considerable time had I known what to do in the first place (when I first installed Workplace on the second machine, it automatically found my user profile and set me up with the same profile as on the first machine - I think that represents a bug and should be fixed)
