Greetings from Boston!

I've posted about this before, but have not been able to resolve the problem.

Collanos Workplace will not run on my main system, which is Debian 64-bit (Debian GNU/Linux 2.6.25-2-amd64).  I've tried replacing the java binary location as detailed in mgkimsal's post (http://forum.collanos.com/index.php?topic=1206.0) but it still fails.  Workplace seems to install fine, but when started, will not allow me into the program because it cannot connect to the Central User Directory to verify my credentials.

The core.log, derby.log, error.log, and transport.log files are all empty because I've never been able to start the program.

I am able to use it without any problem on my (9 year old) 32-bit Debian machine, but that is only a temporary solution and is rapidly coming to an end.  Is it possible that there is some sort of java network issue in the 64-bit libraries?

Workplace is a critical piece of project management at my firm, and I would like to work with you to find a solution for this.  Can anyone recommend anything to try?  I really appreciate your time.

Prost

Hello John, and greetings from Zurich!

Collanos Workplace is built atop the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) framework technology. According to the release notes of Eclipse, it would actually run on Linux 64-bit GTK. See here http://www.eclipse.org/eclipse/development/readme_eclipse_3.4.html#TargetOperatingEnvironments. Eclipse makes the 64-bit Linux version available as a separate set of libraries, which means that we in turn would also have to create a separate installer.

We would be willing to create a special build for you, so that we all can finally find out more about this whole issue. Unfortunately, right now don't have much free capacity to do all the extensive testing and QA, etc. on our end. Would you be willing to help us with some testing? The way I see it is this: We would build a special 64-bit Linux installer for you (actually an internal version of the forthcoming November release). You would run it on your environment (run it only as a test, not yet productively) and provide us some feedback. If everything goes smooth, great, but if some issues arise, you could send us the logs and other feedback.

Please understand that we are just about to release the next version of Workplace, and therefore the whole team is very loaded and under pressure, especially QA. The test as outlined above would give us a chance to find out if Workplace runs on 64-bit Linux with few efforts and without disruption to our current work. Let me know if you are interested. In the meantime I will advise our engineering to asses the steps needed to create the special installer.

Franco!  Thank you for the prompt reply.

Yes, I would be very happy to help you test a 64-bit version of Collanos, and of course, I understand that you're busy.

You note in your reply that Workplace is built using the Eclipse RCP for GTK; I believe that GTK is the Gimp Toolkit, and is used heavily with Gnome.  I use KDE as my desktop, which relies on Qt -- could this be the root of some our problems?

I will check that I have GTK/GTK+ installed, try to get Workplace to run if I log into a Gnome desktop environment instead of KDE, and report back.

Thanks again!
John

Following up on my previous message, GTK2 is installed on my machine, and Workplace does not run under the Gnome desktop.

I checked out the Eclipse RCP target environments link that you sent, and it seems like all of the 64-bit Linux versions were x86_64, but my Linux is AMD64 (the machine is a Thinkpad T60p, Intel Core 2 Duo T7600).  I believe that "AMD64" is a more modern architecture.

Yes, I would be very happy to help with testing.  There may be some other people on the list who would be interested as well.  I understand your time constraints with the upcoming release; I can be contacted off-list via email -- you should be able to get my email from my profile on the boards or on the CUD -- my user name is the same, "mullej2"

I look forward to the new release and to helping put this problem to rest.

John
